Description
The 1857 Flying Eagle Cent is one of the most important coins in early American numismatics. It represents the first year of the small-size U.S. cent, replacing the larger copper cents that had been produced since the 1790s.
Designed by James Barton Longacre and struck by the United States Mint, this coin features a graceful eagle in flight on the obverse and a wreath surrounding the denomination on the reverse.
Because the series was produced for only three years (1856–1858), the Flying Eagle cent is a popular and historically significant coin for collectors.
The 1857 Flying Eagle Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre.
